Purposeful memoir is inner work undertaken with the intention of being of benefit to others–although it doesn’t have to be in the conventional form of a published memoir. Participants will work with the framework laid out in Jennifer’s Nautilus Award-winning writer’s guide, The Elemental Journey of Purposeful Memoir, using Earth, Water, Fire and Air as guiding metaphors for exploring life stages and experiences.
We’ll consider how our childhood passions and impressions were shaped and channeled by the education, both formal and experiential, of our teenage and young adult years. Then we’ll take a good look at ourselves as adults, and consider how our life choices have—or have not—been in alignment with our visions for a vibrant society and healthy planet.
Through carefully chosen readings, writing exercises, guided sharing and facilitated conversations, we’ll work towards an answer to a most potent question for our time: How can each of us be a strong link in the unbroken chain between past and future, using our gifts and dedicating our precious lifetimes to making the world a better place?
This workshop is appropriate not only for writers, but for anyone who cares about the cascading personal, political and planetary crises of our time and wants to explore the potential for purposeful memoir to be a pathway to a thriving future. Participants will gain a greater awareness of the ways our personal stories are informed by and intertwine with the larger political and planetary narratives of our time and place, and will arrive at a deeper understanding of how aligning the personal, political and planetary can increase our potential to have a powerful positive impact on our individual lives, our society and our world.
